Jeff Lee Kitchen

27 December 2011

After visiting KLCC Aquaria, it was time for dinner.

Mommy and Popo complained the other day that we never try much of the restaurants at Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh when we stopped by to get some durian. So, Daddy declared that dinner would be at Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh.

After stopping at the usual durian stall for more durian (yeah...:), Daddy asked the stall owner to recommend a place for dinner. The stall owner said "Yoong Kei" or something and gave the direction which was quite near to the stall. He said the restaurant is famous for its porridge.

Upon arriving at the "place" using the instruction given by the durian stall owner, Daddy could not find "Yoong Kei". It was so frustrating because it was drizzling and we were hungry.

When we thought the durian stall owner gave us wrong instruction, we saw this small restaurant that was packed to the max with lots of people waiting to be seated outside even when it was drizzling.

We thought we will just dine at that restaurant since it was so "famous". Once Daddy entered the restaurant to ask to be seated and order, it is clear that the restaurant is "Yoong Kei" (even though the billboard outside says "Jeff Lee Kitchen"), because the first section on the menu board was porridge and every table seems to have ordered porridge.

The restaurant allowed us to order even though we were still without a table. Daddy ordered the following:
(1) Frog Leg Porridge (later changed to Fish Porridge, because they ran out of Frog Leg)
(2) Si Yau Wong Fa Yuk (Soy Sauce Pork Belly)
(3) Ham Dan Wong Kam Gua (Fried Pumpkin with Salted Egg Yolk)
(4) Wu Tao Chao Kai Lan (Fried Kai Lan with Braised Yam)
(5) Signature Noodle

We waited about 30 minutes to be seated. Then, another almost 30 minutes to be served. All in all, we spent like 2-3 hours for the dinner. We only left at around 9pm while a lot of people were still coming in.

Overall, the food was above average. Somehow, Daddy thought the porridge was overrated. It was good, but not the best we have had. The texture was almost perfect, but the taste was a bit bland.

The "Si Yau Wong Fa Yuk" was the opposite. Even though it wasn't the best we have had (again :), it was quite good (FYI, the best one we have had was at Genting Highlands). The strong taste of the soy sauce coupled with the "Wok Hei" made you want to eat more and more. Plus, it went really well with the porridge.

"Ham Dan Wong Kam Gua" stole the limelight of the day. It was cooked to almost perfection. We could taste the salted egg yolk and the curry leaf used to cook the dish. It was very addictive.

The reason Daddy ordered the "Wu Tao Chao Kai Lan" was because it was simply never-heard-of. The dish turned out to be an average dish and could be skipped unless you are fancy for something special :). Daddy forgot to take photo of this dish, so...sorry!

The signature noodle was a total failure. It was too salty to begin with and was just the same minced meat noodle you could easily find elsewhere. However, the noodle deserved some credits, because it has good springy texture.

If you want to know how "famous" this restaurant is and how "big" was the crowd, look at this photo...

If you want to know how "frustrated" was the wait, look at this photo...

Don't be too bothered with the crowd and the quality of certain food, Jeff Lee Kitchen is definitely worth a try. They just opened a new shop next door (next next door to be exact) and you wouldn't need to wait for that long anymore :).
